We say go for it.

Next time you’re enjoying some Mexican or Tex-Mex fare at one of these fine Austin establishments, order up one of our favorite margaritas.

1. La Condesa

For Mexican food and drink with a classy, modern twist, La Condesa in the 2nd Street district downtown is the place to be. Their signature Margarita La Condesa simply nails it by pulling together next-level ingredients: Tequila Exotico Blanco, damiana, agave nectar, and fresh juice—both lime and pineapple.

You can tell a lot of care goes into this cocktail, and that includes one other extra touch for your taste buds: a cactus lemongrass-infused salt rim.

Goes great with:

$6 Tacos al Pastor at the bar during Happy Hour (Monday–Friday, 5–7pm), while margaritas and other alcoholic drinks are half-off!

What customers have said:

Their selection of tequila and mezcal is extensive, great for both aficionados and those looking to get into tasting.

2. Cyclone Anaya’s Tex-Mex Cantina

This lively Domain Northside joint does Tex-Mex right, so of course, that has to include killer margs. Cyclone Anaya’s offers a mouth-watering selection of special margaritas and other cocktails, but the house’s famous Jumbo Frozen Margarita hits the spot any day—especially weekdays from 11 am–6 pm when they’re $9.99 for Happy Hour!

It’s enough to keep you cool no matter the weather, so if it’s a hot one, take it outside to the patio for some fresh air along with your fresh flavors.

Goes great with:

The Fajitas al Carbon, with either charbroiled skirt steak or marinated chicken breast, served with fresh homemade tortillas and guacamole.

What customers have said:

Basically any margarita you get here will be big, wicked strong, and delicious. You can’t go wrong!

3. Licha’s Cantina

There are tried-and-true ways of putting a lil’ spin on the margarita. Some places offer fun fruit flavor. Some places add a bit of spice.

But why not both? The Lupita margarita at Licha’s blends watermelon-infused vodka with jalapeño (along with Combier liqueur, agave, lime, and a chili salt rim) for refreshing sweetness plus a nice kick.

Goes great with:

Enchiladas a la Potosina, made like the rest of their menu, in an authentic Mexico City style.

What customers have said:

Come to their Happy Hour between 4-7 pm on weekdays and get good-sized margaritas and tasty bites, all for $5 each!

4. Curra’s Grill

I know we all love our avocado margaritas… Wait, you haven’t had one? You owe it to yourself to fix that!

Curra’s Grill, in Travis Heights, bills itself as the “Home of the Original Avocado Margarita,” and guests love what they’ve created. The frozen concoction is cold, creamy, and delicious. They serve other specialty margaritas and cocktails too, but their famed avocado drink is worth trying at least once.

Goes great with:

Another Curra’s specialty, the Conchinita Pibil. It’s flavorful marinated pork baked (and served) in a banana leaf.

What customers have said:

The avocado marg is definitely memorable and unique. It’s like a green smoothie… but with alcohol!

Besides tastes, visuals can play a big part in setting the margarita mood. At Vivo, you’ll be thrown into Margaritaville at first sight of the bright and colorful cocktails, each garnished with a beautiful flower to round out the presentation. It all fits in perfectly with the bright and colorful location at the Linc shopping center that they moved to in 2014.

And taste-wise, you can customize their already-delicious house margaritas with prickly pear, mango, strawberry, or blood orange flavor, as well as hibiscus syrup or cucumber puree.

Goes great with:

A plate of two Puffy Tacos served with beans and rice.

What customers have said:

If you miss their Tex-Mex brunch from 11 am–3 pm on Sunday, don’t worry—they have it on Mondays, too!

6. Fonda San Miguel

Fonda San Miguel hasn’t stayed an institution of Mexican cuisine in Austin for more than 40 years without knowing how to whip up some great drinks.

All their options are excellent, and that definitely includes the refreshingly spicy El Pepino Pica, made with cucumber and serrano pepper along with Tequila Ocho Silver and Cointreau liqueur. It’s a work of art—just like the paintings from Mexican artists that adorn the space.

Goes great with:

The popular Ceviche Las Brisas, authentic and generously portioned.

What customers have said:

Their famous Sunday brunch is on the pricey side, but it’s hard to beat the mind-blowing selection and quantity of scrumptious food.
